Supporting families with hospitalised children

The recent story you have published of Sharon Partridge, who is abseiling to raise money for the paediatric unit treating her daughter, Rachel, following serious injury in a car accident, is a moving one indeed.

It appears that recovery may take time and it will be a difficult time for all concerned.

You mention that Sharon is staying close by the University Hospital Southampton in one of our free ‘home away from home’ houses. We should like to let your readers know that we have 14 of these houses at hospitals across the country. Last year we helped support more than 7,000 families with children in hospital.

On the south coast we have two Houses: one in Southampton and one in Brighton. Our Ronald McDonald House Southampton serves a wide catchment area. It has 53 en suite bedrooms and offers families the opportunity to cook together and share their experiences through the facilities of communal rooms such as lounge, kitchen and play areas. Similarly our Ronald McDonald House Brighton has 18 rooms and communal living area with a patio garden.

While we do enjoy the support of McDonald’s as their ‘Charity of Choice’, we are an independent charity

and rely on the generosity of supporters and fundraisers to continue our work.

We hope that Sharon will stay as long as necessary at our House and that being near her daughter will both ease the strain for her and assist with Rachel’s recovery.
