Serious consequences to pavement parking in Worthing

This situation with vehicles parking wholly or partially on pavements in Worthing is now becoming serious, and it's only a matter of time before somebody steps out into the road to avoid a pavement obstruction and will face the devastating consequences following somebody's thoughtless action.

I recently came across several vehicles parked on the pavement where I could not pass in my wheelchair with my assistance dog, Herbie.

The drivers of these vehicles quite blatantly ignored the fact that I could not pass their vehicle.

In fact one driver laughed at me, and just carried on what he had been doing.

Parking on the pavement is dangerous, simply because people in wheelchairs, mums with pushchairs and the visually impaired, have to step out into the road in order to pass the obstruction. Not only this, but there is also the cost of the damage to the pavements.

There are several pavements which have now been damaged so badly that they have formed ‘potholes’, one or two of which I have tipped into.

The cost of remedial work to pavements should not be borne by the council, that should be down to the drivers who leave their vehicles parked on the pavement. I have recently photographed of some of these thoughtless drivers, and hope to compile a gallery – perhaps naming and shaming would be the answer.

Unfortunately, due to cutbacks, it is not easy for the police and PCSOs to control violations of local bylaws, and reporting by dialling 101 as suggested, is definitely not the answer, as it takes so long to get a reply. There has to be a solution to this problem before something drastic happens.
