Problem with the Sompting rat run

I read with interest councillor Anne Godley's letter on the Sompting rat run (letters, September 8), particularly her admission that she is a Church Lane resident.

Much of the rush-hour’s extra traffic through the village is fed into West Street by drivers seeking a short-cut from the A27 down Church Lane, a way to avoid the Lyons Farm traffic lights.

Because this traffic has right of way at the mini-roundabout outside the Marquis of Granby pub, west-bound traffic along West Street, including buses, are backed up to the east.

I suggested years ago to my then local councillor (who didn’t happen to live in the village) that some of the pressure would be taken off West Street if left turns off the A27 into Church Lane were forbidden.

I was told that residents of Church Lane did not want this.

Councillor Godley has the resolution of at least part of her problem in her own hands.
