New charges for recycling at Sussex waste tips

Not all readers may be aware that as from October 1, some pretty harsh discrimination against DIYers is going to kick in at the local tip ('˜Household Waste Recycling Site').

It seems that we are to be charged for tipping soil, rubble (excluding garden gnomes), tiles, toilet pans, plaster board, etc – but not for items made of wood or metal. Tyres will also be charged at £4 each, though larger ones (e.g., ex-LDV) will be barred altogether.

Opening hours are also being severely cut.

West Sussex County Council claims that it’s in the interests of economy, but have they thought things through? It seems to me that extra site staff will be needed to police the process, and deal with the money, or else long queues will form and presumably the cost of dealing with increased fly-tipping elsewhere in the county will also rocket.

Meanwhile the concept of recycling will presumably continue to be flouted.

I refer to the situation where Person A spots an item being dumped by Person B – but if he wants to intercept it, he is told by the site staff ‘you can’t take that, sir – it’s stealing!’.

It’s understandable that the council wishes to save money, but surely there are other ways? For example did we really need that expensive PFI contract that scrapped most of our lamp posts – many of which were perfectly good, and replace them with new ones of a shorter life?
