Memories of Lancing's unexploded bomb

I wonder how many people still remember the unexploded bomb found on a building site in Old Salts Farm Road, Lancing, in August 1976?

My mother and I were among those who lived in the road and all had to be evacuated at once while the UXB was exploded on the nearby beach by the bomb squad.

All those without nearby relatives had to stay overnight at the Lancing Parish Hall.

We were given blankets and chairs to try to get some sleep that night.

This news item was widely reported on the radio so even my aunt in Suffolk heard it and was alarmed for our safety.

We were enjoying our breakfast of scrambled eggs cooked by the local boy scouts in the hall’s kitchen when news came that the bomb had just been safely exploded on the beach.

It was all wonderfully organised by the local council and scouts leader, Community Care in Action at short notice .

Could it still be done in 2016 I wonder?
