LETTER: Warning over gift cards

Could I, through your paper, advise readers that if they have received gift cards for leading stores that they only have a certain lifespan '“ in other words they will expire and you will lose any value on them.

I speak from experience, having over many birthdays and Christmases received numerous gift cards for a leading high street chemist and stationers/book shop.

When trying to spend one recently I was told that the card had expired, despite never having used it.

As a result of this I had all the other cards checked and all had expired.

On contacting the various head offices I was told that unless the cards are used within the specified time between 12 and 24 months they will expire and no refund will be available.

To my way of thinking, this is theft by stealth.

I lost over £120 in expired gift cards and have vowed never to use these particular establishments again. So check your gift cards or you will lose out.
