LETTER: Memorial anomaly

The listing of Worthing war casualties from September 1915 (Looking Back, October 15) throws up an interesting anomaly.

Charles Boniface, killed at Loos on September 25, 1915, appears on both the borough war memorial and that of St Mary of the Angels Roman Catholic church.

However, 18 others displayed on the church memorial do not appear on its borough counterpart.

These include two men who also died at Loos.

One of these was Lt. Col. Walter Gaisford, youngest son of Thomas Gaisford and his third wife Alice, owner of Offington Hall and founder of St Mary’s 150 years ago.

The recently published history of St Mary of the Angels by Dennis Key lists, in some detail, the parish casualties but offers no explanation for their omission from the borough memorial.

Perhaps the centenary of the 1914 to 1918 war would be an opportunity to investigate why these men do not appear on the town’s main monument, and consider adding them to it?
