Lancing's Salts Farm plan is welcome

Inevitably a proposal of this nature is going to be controversial.

However, none of us can escape the simple fact that the supply of new housing is failing to meet the demands of our growing population.

The truth of the matter is that we are not going to be able to stop the population growing and we must, one way or another, address the housing shortage.

There is only one way to deal with this and that is to build more homes.

The reality is that we are faced with two alternatives, either to build on brownfield sites where inevitably due to the costs the proposal is controversial due to density and height, or alternatively look for suitable greenfield sites.

For my part, I think that this is a suitable location for residential development.

If we look at our local geography and undertake an exercise to rank in terms of priority those ‘greenfield’ locations that could be built upon, I would rather do so on this parcel of land than those open spaces to the north of the railway line.

In terms of greenfield development, we obviously cannot go further south than the coastline and the Downs are a treasure which is looked after by the South Downs National Park Authority.

With this thought in mind we are left with trying to locate land with potential for development between the coast and the Downs.

I know what I have said will be controversial but I believe it is the right way to help address our housing supply crisis.
