Lancing beach hut no longer a joy to visit

This is an open letter to all the people who may know me and my mother.

We had the original white beach hut – the fourth one along the coastal path, after Lancing Sailing Club.

We had been there since 1957 as a family.

I spent my childhood there at weekends and school holidays and it was wonderful!

It is no longer a happy place to be. I had to pay an extortionate rent, compared to the new huts and over the years we had wonderful neighbours but my luck ran out there as well.

Then there are the wretched cyclists all day every day. I do not understand how it can be beyond the ability of West Sussex Adur and Lancing councils and the owner of the site to stop cyclists in front of the beach huts on that narrow path.

They all appear to have thrown in the towel.

Cyclists race along at speed eight to ten in a pack. They are rude, obnoxious foul-mouthed when challenged about their speed and totally arrogant.

Why do these councils never learn you cannot put cyclists with pedestrians. It never works. Cyclists will always abuse any space they are given. If they can’t push past pedestrians, they will ride over the concrete front of your hut. We had to keep chairs right up to the edge of the path. It was like living on the Tour de France route. I won’t miss them.

It is all of you who stopped and spoke to us, and your dogs took a ‘pit stop’ at my water bowl, and all of you who gave me advice when you saw me painting my hut, that I will miss.

So thank you all for your company and conversations over the years. I hope to see you sometimes when I come to visit friends unless I’m mown down by a speeding cyclist
