Hospitals will lose out

I am appalled to read in last week's Herald that the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has put out the running of the cafes and shops in the two hospitals to tender and invited commercial organisations to run them.

If this goes to a commercial organisation it will destroy the Friends of both hospitals. The Friends have raised probably millions of pounds over the years and take pride in what they do. The atmosphere will change. The commercial organisation will put up prices and keep their profit. The Friends, as a charity, get donations and legacies. The hospital can only lose money on this crazy idea. It will lose good will. The friendly volunteers are a real support

and the food is reasonably priced. If one is visiting often price is a matter of great concern.

The Trust has been commended for its healthy eating food in its cafes and restaurants. No commercial organisation will keep that up!

David Jones is reported as saying they want to make things better for visitors, patients and staff. Has he ever had a coffee at the Southlands café on his own after or before a worrying consultation? I visit all three hospitals and am quite sure things will not be better.
