I write regarding the upcoming 75th VE Day which was to be celebrated on the new bank holiday Friday May 8. Amid the current crisis many street parties have been cancelled and many other celebrations and marches have been postponed, while some councils are putting off celebrations until VJ Day in August.

Might I suggest, through your paper, that we still try to celebrate as much as possible – with Union Jack flags and banners hanging from our houses? There are many manufacturers who would welcome the sales if these were ordered online.

Families could also have their own party in their own houses/gardens/balconies, so we could still be ordering paper plates and cups with the Union Jack design that are no doubt sitting in warehouses not yet sold.

With two weeks to go there is still probably time. People could also make their own bunting, decorations or posters and post pictures of them online –also any wonderfully designed Union Jack cakes or bakes.

I am sure some keen cooks/children would be delighted to show their efforts off

I believe it is intended for the nation to join a singalong at 9pm with a rendition of Dame Vera’s We’ll Meet Again, so it would be lovely to see many flags or banners flying in the streets that evening and in fact the whole week before, since the original bank holiday was on May 4.

Let us invoke the spirit of Captain Tom Moore and hang out our banners and celebrate the true British spirit and show that we will keep calm and carry on.

If nothing else these flags and banners will brighten up our streets – along with the many rainbow posters placed in people’s windows.

Maybe we can keep them up until lockdown is over – at least when out for exercise it might help to cheer people up.
