Council to keep killing foxes

Whispering Smith tells us Littlehampton Town Council's community resources committee has voted 5 to 2 to go on killing foxes on allotments.

Everyone has to be able to explain and justify decisions they take anywhere. Can those who voted to continue please write in here and explain their reasons for their decision – and at the same time can someone please prove that this killing does not involve in any way snares set by authorities or individuals privately.

With man encroaching so far on the territory of wildlife everywhere, humans and wildlife necessarily intermingle. Many householders have their resident foxes who visit nightly and people think of the foxes as ‘theirs’ and like to name them.

So, suppose Bramble the big handsome dog fox is killed, or Victoria, his vixen, or one of their cubs, or any other of the named foxes. Or, heaven forbid, a pet fox.

Such animals exist around the country here and there.

Then there are quite a lot of rescued and rehabilitated foxes from wildlife hospitals and charities, carefully looked after or nursed back to health to be released for a second chance at life. Suppose you catch one of these? Or suppose it’s “just” a totally unknown wild fox who has to live by his wits in an ever-shrinking countryside.

Please explain to us so that we can see the absolute necessity and reasonability of your decision – especially as Whispering Smith points out that when you kill one fox, another fills the vacant patch anyway. Is someone after a job for life here?
