Care for our town now for future generations

Among its other activities, the Shoreham Society has been monitoring and commenting on all major Shoreham development proposals and planning applications made to Adur District Council.

Recently, we supported the objections of West Street residents to the demolition of The Old Dairy, whose demolition has fortunately been rejected. Councillor Brian Coomber quite correctly wrote the previous week that renaissance and change have to occur.

However, we perceive that, at present, the current vision for Shoreham/Adur is, by default and by the need to meet targets, of developer-led change, with reluctant preservation of only islands of listed buildings.

The vision we would prefer to see would accept the historic base of Shoreham/Adur, to provide a townscape full of history and a sense of continuity, while still meeting targets and providing an adequate balance, and diversity, between recreation, work and good living accommodation, for the benefit of all residents.

Our concern is that, in 30 years time, young residents will be saying "how could our parents' and grandparents' generations have allowed so much of Shoreham's history to disappear?"

We would welcome new members to support our preferred vision and to contribute to our activities.
