Better traffic flow without lights a '˜myth'

Once again the myth of better traffic flow without traffic lights raises it's head.

Perhaps you can move quickly if you just want to turn from Warren Road onto the Upper Brighton Road. However, there is chaos for those travelling north from Worthing. This roundabout is only less trouble during the long August school break. Now, the vehicles coming off the Upper Brighton Road, and moving onto Warren Road completely dominate. Particularly the huge juggernauts.

Even at mid-day the queue from Worthing northwards extends to the roundabout by the Cricketers pub, because NOTHING coming from Brighton pauses to allow flow from Worthing.

You only get the chance to move when the occasional vehicle wants to use the road to Worthing, or South Farm Road.

I witnessed a lorry driver from The Upper Brighton Road tooting his horn and shouting abuse at a frustrated car driver who had the temerity to move in from the Worthing queue.

The attitude of most drivers today seems to be “me first”, and to avoid total chaos and serious accidents, traffic control in the form of lights is needed. This is a complex roundabout, and I have witnessed many drivers obviously unused to it getting into trouble with being in the wrong lane. Add that to the frustrations of not moving and you will risk road rage as well as accidents.

Perhaps those advocating removal of the lights need to think beyond their own convenience. Too much to ask I guess.
