An alternative should already exist

LETTERS from readers in last week's edition raised the problems besetting the Dial-a-Ride service operated by Adur Community Transport.

This service provides an essential means of transport for people excluded from using other forms of transport because of their disabilities.

This is evident in the letter from Sue Reid, who highlighted the use of the service by her parents, one of whom is blind.

The other is wheelchair-bound. It would appear that the council is to cease support for Adur Community Transport and Dial-a-Ride, but to consider alternatives for the latter.

Surely it should have an alternative ready before pulling the rug from under deserving people '“ "carts before horses" comes to mind.

The committee chairman, in his letter on the subject, highlights the introduction of the free bus pass as a reason for taking such draconian steps against an organisation that serves such needy people.

The council's community and leisure services committee will have these matters on its agenda at Southwick Community Centre on Tuesday, at 7pm. Go along and raise your objections. Meetings are open to the public.
