Adur's overdevelopment was the issue not anti-development

The tone of the meeting was not anti-development, but was opposed to overdevelopment, in particular concerning the height of new buildings and possible development on flood plains.

It was unclear what planning consideration is being given to the type of developments. Will they be attractive to property speculators (buy to let landlords)? How many Adur locals will be able to afford the luxury flats? What percentage of the housing will actually be deemed affordable? How many young families, even if they can afford to, will want to buy into developments adjacent to seriously polluted and congested roads? Will there be room in schools and doctors surgeries for them?

If Mr Brecknell is really concerned about the younger generation, he should be concerned about all these issues as they will combine to affect the quality of life of both existing and new residents.

I have never been to a National Front meeting but doubt that the over 200 attendees at the well chaired and orderly meeting at the Yacht Club are happy with the comparison that Mr Brecknell made. Thanks to the Shoreham Society and Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association for organising the meeting and allowing residents to have a say. Maybe all the developers will send representatives to the next meeting.
