VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Make a difference to someone's life

By volunteering just a short amount of your time, you really could make a massive difference to someone's life.

Whether it is helping them to do something they wouldn’t be able to do by themselves, or supporting them through challenging situations and experiences, you could make that person’s life easier and more enjoyable.

Here are some of the ways you could help:

Home visiting volunteer – Home-Start Arun

Home-start volunteers visit families with at least one child under-five once a week and offer support to families facing a wide range of issues.

Volunteers are someone the family can talk to confidentially; they can play with the children or introduce ideas for activities; a volunteer could be ‘an extra pair of hands’ in everyday situations or accompany on outings to the park, library or toddler group.

Volunteers can also give information on services and offer reassurance and understanding that bringing up children can be difficult.

Volunteer recovery coach, family coach and community coach – Emerging Futures CIC

Emerging Futures CIC believes that everyone has the potential to grow, learn and achieve the best they can in everything they do.

They are looking for volunteers to work in the community supporting people in recovery from addiction; working towards building a recovery community across West Sussex.

Role requirements are as follows: recovery coach – in their own sustained recovery for six months or more, family coach – have experience of family member addiction, community coach – want to make a difference in their community.

You must be over 18 for this role and a DBS check will be required.

Volunteer sessions worker – Arun Sunshine Group

Arun Sunshine Group aims to provide a regular break for carers by providing a safe and friendly befriending service and social programme for adults with a learning difficulty in their care.

The group aims to counter isolation, provide friendship, company and stimulation whilst aiming to improve communication and social skills.

Activities include board games, jigsaws, arts and crafts, and trips out to local pubs.

As a volunteer sessions worker you will help to run this very worthwhile project under the supervision of the senior sessions worker.

No special skills are required; you just need to be loving, caring and enthusiastic.

Housebound reader service volunteer – West Sussex Library Service

West Sussex Library Service is looking for volunteers to select, deliver and return books and other stock for people who are unable to travel to or use their nearest library due to age, illness or disability.

Tasks will include: selecting books and other stock (e.g. audiobooks) to suit the requirements of your reader, delivering books and other stock to your reader and returning books to the library, reserving specific items if necessary, helping your reader to be aware of the full range of items available in the library, using the self-service machines to issue items to your volunteer’s ticket and return items and communicating any queries or concerns to library staff.

This is a flexible role with the number of readers visited and the frequency of visits dependent upon the amount of time the volunteer can give and the needs of the reader.
