VOLUNTEER COLUMN: Lots of opportunities to help across area

There are so many amazing charities and organisations in the area that provide services to the local community, and while the type of work they do varies greatly, the one thing they all have in common is the need for volunteers.

For most of the roles, you don’t need any specific skills or experience, just enthusiasm and a willingness to be involved.

You could make such a big difference by volunteering even just a small amount of your time.

Help running IT club/silver surfers’ group – Angmering Community Centre Association

After the success of their Windows 7 training courses and drop-in sessions for people with specific problems on their laptops, the Angmering Community Centre Association is aiming to move their sessions on.

Volunteers with a knowledge of smartphones and tablets are particularly needed for the drop-in sessions.

In addition they are about to run short courses to help people new to Windows 10 on their laptops and would welcome a volunteer able to run such courses.

Education events volunteer – RNLI

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea; they provide, on call, a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service and a seasonal lifeguard service.

Education events volunteers are needed to promote the work of the RNLI, to communicate sea safety messages at events and hand out relevant literature and materials to promote sea safety.

Other activities include; providing assistance at specific events such as child safety and youth events, competitions, quizzes, surveys, supervising young people during activities, assisting with administering surveys and competitions, promoting fundraising opportunities, providing copies of records to the REO as requested and attending training offered by the RNLI.

Volunteer hours are flexible and designed to suit individual needs.

Full training, resources and expenses are provided.

Shop worker (Littlehampton) – Scope West Sussex

Scope exists to make this country a place where disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.

They provide support, information and advice to more than a quarter of a million disabled people and their families every year.

Shop workers are required to carry out various duties such as: till work; sorting, hanging and steaming clothes; sorting bric-a-brac and window dressing.

No experience is needed as full training will be given, but you will need good team skills and a pleasant manner, plus a good sense of humour.

Various days and hours are available to suit you.

Readers – The Voice of Progress

The Voice of Progress was formed in 1975 and is wholly run and supported by volunteers.

They produce fortnightly recordings of local news, taken with permission from local newspapers, as well as a talking magazine put together by their very talented and passionate volunteers.

Readers are required to compile one talking magazine a year which consists of a talk about one or more subjects which interest them and hopefully which would interest the listeners.

As a start, any reader accepted would be put on a reserve list and they can then read as many or as few times as they like when they are asked.
