Technology Made Easy: Speak out to spell words

GOOGLE has released a new Chrome experiment called Spell Up, a spelling game where users interact by speaking to spell words, writes James Stoner.

Google sought the advice of game designers and teachers to make the game both fun and educational, and it is designed to improve the player’s use of the English language.

Spell Up is a browser-based game that uses voice recognition technology.

The game works best using Google’s Chrome browser. But, unfortunately, on Chrome for iOS a player will need to type rather than talk.

Users can start at any level, and the aim is to build ‘towers’ of words by spelling them correctly after the game has spoken the word to them.

The higher the tower gets, the more difficult the word challenges become.

As the game develops, users are asked to pronounce words correctly, solve word jumbles, and guess mystery words. Players are further encouraged by the chance to earn bonuses and coins to level-up faster.

If you find Spell Up helpful, you could try Sight Words, too. Sight Words is an app that helps students learn the most common words in children’s literature.

The app is presented with fun videos, aiding reading comprehension by helping learners to understand their meaning.
