TECHNOLOGY: Keeping viruses at bay

As many of you will be aware, at JSPC we provide ICT support for businesses and schools in West Sussex and beyond. One of the worries we encounter most frequently with new clients is fear of internet viruses and the potential they have to corrupt IT systems.

This worry is not just limited to businesses, we can all be affected so here are some tips on how to avoid those unpleasant technological bugs.

It is really important to never open email attachments unless you know the source. The number one cause of infection is via email attachments, so if the email address looks suspicious or you do not recognise the sender, it is best to delete the message.

Sometimes there is no escaping the need to download items from the web. Only downloading files from reputable sites is the best way to help protect your PC from risk of viral infection, so be selective about what you download and from where.

One of the most overlooked facilities on computers is the built in ability to keep your operating system up to date. Software manufacturers are constantly fixing bugs and making improvements to the software you use every day. You can set your device to automatically update by going to Start > Control Panel > Automatic Updating for PCs, and for Macs clicking Apple Menu > System Preferences > App Store and checking the Automatically Check for Updates tick box.

Using up to date antivirus software is also important when keeping your device safe from viruses. Sometimes there is no way of telling that your computer has been infected with a virus until much later, an antivirus programme will warn you immediately of a problem with your system so you can then deal with it before it is too late.
