I am delighted to report that the recent recruitment day we held at the hospice was a brilliant success.

As a result of a busy and productive day we were able to recruit four new bank staff nurses, in addition to one permanent post, in our in-patient unit (IPU).

Recruitment is a growing challenge to all healthcare providers and this will put us in a much stronger position to be able to consistently admit patients, even when staff sickness is an issue.

Our IPU provides a friendly, warm and calm environment for patients, often in the final days of life, as well as respite care for those with advanced progressive life-limiting illnesses.

We have a large team of nurses who provide our hospice care services, many of whom are very experienced and have a specialist knowledge in palliative care.

The IPU at St Barnabas House has 20 beds across five wings, including five family rooms.

All rooms are private with en-suite facilities and each wing has a comfortable communal lounge where patients and their relatives can relax in spacious surroundings.

At St Barnabas House we aim to offer a high-quality and personalised care service, focusing on the quality of life of our patients, tailoring our care to their specific needs and wishes.

During 2015/16 there were 456 admissions to the IPU and 5,487 occupied bed days at the hospice, equivalent to an occupancy level of 75 per cent.

We are delighted to welcome our five new nurses to the IPU team as we strive to continue to provide outstanding hospice care services for our local community.
