ST BARNABAS: Fantastic works of art on display at St Barnabas

I was greeted by some wonderful artwork on display when I arrived back at work last week having been away on holiday.

During the last week of June we held a special art exhibition, showcasing a selection of photography and paintings created by some of the patients who are currently being cared for by the Day Hospice.

We are extremely lucky at St Barnabas House to be one of very few hospices in the country to have our own spacious, dedicated art studio.

This allows patients to explore both traditional art, such as painting, printing, drawing and sculpture, as well as digital arts including video, audio and photography.

At a time when many people may surrender their career or social life and at times lose their sense of purpose, the creative process can enable them to discover a new sense of self and meaning.

It also gives people the opportunity to express feelings they may otherwise be unable to, allowing them to communicate an idea or concern to a loved one in a deeply profound way, while also acting as a lasting visual legacy.

A variety of works are still on display, ranging from a fantastic self-portrait painted by Ron, a talented former graphic designer who currently attends the Day Hospice, to our “Hands project” which invited patients to think about the things they have done with their hands.
