ST BARNABAS: Annual pantomime at the Day Hospice

This year’s show was based on Peter Bond’s ‘Jack and the Beantin’, an unconventional twist on the classic panto favourite Jack and the Beanstalk.

The fantastic cast consisted entirely of members of staff who had a great time entertaining the audience.

Characters included a poor mother Mrs Broke (portrayed by our chaplain Stephen Gurr) and son Jack Broke (nurse Ruth Milne), Gertrude the cow (day hospice manager Kaz Worton-Casey) and Herbert Little, the giant (activities co-ordinator Gina Rogers) – the irony being that Gina is one of our shortest members of staff!

Audience participation in the show was superb with plenty of booing and hissing at the appropriate moments and cries of “Oh no she won’t!”, as well as renditions of classic songs including ‘Consider Yourself’ from Oliver Twist.

On a more touching note, Wednesday was a particularly special day for one Day Hospice visitor who was celebrating his 69th birthday.

To mark the occasion the entire panto cast and all of the audience sang Happy Birthday to him.

Heart-warming moments like this, mixed in with all of the fun and excitement, are what make the Day Hospice at St Barnabas House a truly special environment.
