KEVIN KING: Proud to be British after fantastic spectacle at Goodwood

Perhaps it is best explained as someone who will happily and patiently spend a fair amount of time queuing on the A27 in West Sussex, gradually crawling towards the Goodwood Estate and, ironically, the annual Festival Of Speed.

Since it began in 1993, Charles, the Earl of March, has welcomed motoring enthusiasts from all over the UK and the world to his home that, for four days, is transformed into a car lover’s dream.

Over the past 22 years the event has become a fixed part of the F1 calendar and is always scheduled the week before the British Grand Prix.

And so last weekend an estimated 200,000 people descended upon his Lordship’s pile to witness historic and modern vehicles taking on the challenge of the infamous ‘hill climb’, a one mile strip of tarmac that wends its way up his South Downs estate.

Some are racing the clock while others are just enjoying the honour of being invited to take part.

And what a fantastic spectacle the whole weekend is.

Where else can you get up close to not only a Formula 1 car, but also the drivers, who love the atmosphere equally as much as the crowd?

Then there are all the historic racing cars (some with a price tag that runs into millions) and the legendary drivers.

We were lucky enough to be next to a couple of motoring Knights of the Realm as they climbed into their classic racing chariots.

It was fabulous to see Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss soak up the adulation of the knowledgeable crowd as they drove the hill.

One of my favourite moments was when stunt driver Terry Grant drove a Nissan Juke up the hill in a world record time... On two wheels! Incredible!

Another highlight for me was not on the hill, or even among the plethora of fabulous exhibits, but, in the sky.

Every year the amazing Red Arrows put on a display that has the crowd cheering with delight.

And did we all feel proud to be British? Absolutely!
