KEVIN KING: Do you remember the thrill of the last day of school?

It’s that time of year when all pupils (and quite a few teachers) become very excite, for as Alice Cooper put it, “school’s out for summer!”

Was there, and indeed for the current alumni, is there, any better feeling of the bell ringing on the last day of term signalling the start of the long summer break?

Do you remember the thrill of your teacher announcing, in the final week of term, that your class would be allowed to bring in games on the last day?

What excitement there was at arriving on that oh-so brilliant day with Monopoly, Cluedo, Mousetrap, Ker-Plunk, Uno, Connect Four and other assorted delights.

In today’s high-tech world these pastimes may seem archaic but in reality they were the ‘must-haves’ from just one generation ago.

Who remembers the wonderment of the ‘Pop-A-Matic Dice Shaker’ that was built into the game ‘Frustration’ (a 20th century version of Ludo)?

This was a simple way of throwing a dice without the actual inconvenience of throwing!

It may sound daft now, but reminiscing about the TV commercial back in the day, you believed that this was the ‘Ferrari’ of game accessories.

Talking of board game legends, what about ‘The Magic Robot’?

This was a game that consisted of a plastic robot holding a pointer that you would place next to a sheet of printed questions.

Once your question had been ‘asked’ the robot would then be placed in the centre of a ring of answers.

He would then spin to select the correct one. Amazing!

Having discussed this childhood miracle with friends recently, Jane managed to find the very game for sale on-line and surprised me with it.

Even though my years have advanced (slightly) the wonder of this game still holds true and although there is a temptation to dissect its workings, some things are best left in our childhood.

So, to all pupils (and teachers) who are now counting down, enjoy the looming excitement.

And to all the big stores getting their ‘Back to School’ stock ready to go on sale, could you wait a couple of weeks?
