HEALTH AND CARE: Sussex smokers urged to sign up together for Stoptober

The Herald & Gazette have joined forces with GP practices in the area which form part of the NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). This week, they are encouraging people to sign up for Stoptober.

There are now only 13 days to go until the country joins together to support each other to go smoke free.

Thousands of people from across West Sussex are expected to stop smoking as part of the Stoptober national campaign – and this year is set to be the biggest yet.

This year people are being encouraged to sign up with a loved one or a close friend, as together you are more likely to be successful.

For example, did you know that two thirds of people are more likely to stop smoking successfully if your partner also stops?

Similarly a third are more likely to kick the habit when a close friend or someone you work with stops.

It is all about encouragement and support, and making sure that you have people around you to keep you motivated.

Giving up smoking can be really difficult and it can take more than one attempt, but by stopping smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stop for good.

By signing up to Stoptober, you can access a range of help and support.

For the first time this year the campaign is also offering advice if you are trying to go smokefree by using an e-cigarette.

Support is also available across Coastal West Sussex – GP practices across the area offer tailored support, and there is a local stop smoking team, which provides drop in sessions, one-to-one support, and advice.

Stopping smoking is the most effective thing you can to do for you and your family’s health.

And the benefits are not just health related, but also in terms of the amount of money you can save by not smoking – for example, an average smoker could save more than £150 a month and almost £2,000 a year.

The local NHS can find the best way to help you through your attempt.

There is no reason not to give it a go.

Find out more about Stoptober at www.smokfree.nhs.uk/stoptober and for local support contact your GP practice or the local stop smoking team on 0300 100 1823 and the teams can work with you to find the best support for you.
