HEALTH AND CARE: New walk in service provides help and support for children

THE Herald & Gazette has joined forces with GP practices in the area which form part of the NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). This week, the practices speak about a new children’s walk in service.

Last week, we shared news that we were launching our new Minor Injury Assessment & Minor Illness (MIAMI) clinics across Adur and Worthing, and this week we are delighted to be announcing further good news.

From yesterday (July 1) a new Children’s Walk In service has also launched for the patients of 19 GP surgeries living in Adur and Worthing.

The service, that is available Monday to Friday, from 4pm to 7.30pm, is based at our MIAMI clinic at Durrington Health Centre, and we hope will be a fantastic addition to NHS services locally for our patients.

Parents don’t have to pre-book for the clinic, simply turn up and they can provide help and support for any minor injury or illness.

The MIAMI Children’s Walk In service is not intended to treat long term conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes) or serious medical conditions, so please continue to book appointments with their own GP for these types of on-going health problems.

But the types of conditions the clinics can see are sore throats, ear ache, vomiting and persistent diarrhoea, and sprains and strains.

Your child will be seen by a GP or nurse, and they will inform your normal GP surgery of any treatment your child has received.

It is important to be clear, that the MIAMI Children’s Walk In service is not intended to be a substitute for an A&E department.

Dial 999 or go to the nearest A&E if your child has a true emergency such as severe shortness of breath, severe cuts or burns, a head injury with a loss of consciousness, or bleeding that does not stop.

The aim is that the new MIAMI Children’s Walk In service can help to support parents to get the best treatment for their child, and provide an appropriate local alternative to A&E when your child’s condition may not be life threatening.
