HEALTH AND CARE: New clinics set to launch across Worthing and Adur next week

The Herald & Gazette has joined forces with GP practices in the area which form part of the NHS Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). This week, the practices speak about new clinics launching across the area.

We are delighted to say that a brand new service for Worthing and Adur launches next week.

From Wednesday, July 1, 19 GP practices across the area will be able to book our patients into new Minor Injury Assessment & Minor Illness (MIAMI) clinics.

At the MIAMI clinics, patients will be able to access urgent care and support from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and attend pre-bookable chronic disease management, sexual health, smear and family planning services on Saturdays and Sundays.

By urgent care we mean treatment and support for a short term illness or injury that cannot wait for a pre-bookable appointment at your own surgery, such as a chest infection, urinary or bowel problems, sore eyes, or abdominal pain.

It is not intended to be a substitute for emergency services and anyone with a life-threatening condition should still go to A&E.

Patients will only be able to access these urgent appointments via your own GP practice, once they have filled all of their own urgent appointments – and your practice will be able to advise you were to go and when you will be seen.

We hope that these new clinics will help to improve access to doctors and nurses for our patients, and help our local GP practices to re-focus on pre-bookable routine appointments for on-going care and reduce waiting times for these types of appointments, as the GP practices know that urgent appointments are available elsewhere.

The MIAMI clinics will be staffed by local GPs, nurses and paramedic practitioners who will – with your consent – have full access to your patient notes at your own GP practice’s records.

Your normal GP practice will also be able to access the records of the new clinics so any care you receive goes back onto your normal, regular records.

We want to make sure that patients can be confident that their on-going long term care will continue at their normal GP practice but that they now have the option of a new alternative, more accessible system, for short term urgent problems.

Find out more about the service on your GP practice website.
