Girl’s charity event uses range of business skills

I was impressed recently to learn about a ten-year- old Worthing girl, Mabel Beverton-Trewin, who was inspired to raise money for Water Aid by putting on a Family Craft and Fun Day, requiring her to learn the entrepreneurial basics of marketing, planning, budgeting and organisation at such a young age.

Having attended her successful event, I asked her some questions. Her answers can be seen below:

What inspired you to put on the event?

Realising I had missed the Sports Relief Run! Last year, I raised £200 by running two miles.

Mum said I could do my own thing, so we discussed different charities and I chose Water Aid, as I felt everyone should have clean, safe water.

What part of the event planning did you enjoy the most?

Getting the donations in for the raffle and the cafe as I could see the event coming together.

What part was the hardest?

We only had one hour to do everything to set up the event.

Making sure the floats were right, that people were in the right places, getting the bunting up, posters sorted, setting the stalls up – there was so much to do.

What were you most pleased with?

How many people turned up and supported the event. I raised £458 on the day.

Since then, the total has reached £610 through my donations page. My target is £1,000.

What are the top three things you learned?

1. Planning. From the start I had to have a list and an idea of what to do, from donations to who would be running what stall.

2. The support of fantastic friends and family to help run the stalls, set up and tidy. It was essential.

3. I had to speak to many people and try to get donations, sponsors or good deals.

I think I really improved at talking and negotiating with people as time went on, as I was very scared at the start.

Would you do it again?

Yes. Definitely. It was hard work but the thing that kept me going if things went wrong is that I knew we were helping to save people’s lives.
