CHRISTIAN COMMENT Comic Relief

I recently spent a Friday evening in watching Comic Relief and I can’t remember the last time I laughed and cried so much.

The programmes were very informative and the entertainment was first class.

It was seeing British comedy at its best and at the same time saving lives in the process.

It was heart rending seeing the plight of a mother desperately trying to get her little child to the hospital for life saving drugs that cost less than a hamburger and fries.

It was heart warming seeing young people saved from gangs and older couples given hope.

I was impressed with Lenny Henry for breaking the rules to provide a better accommodation for young Bernard and his family in the Kibera slums in Kenya.

But, as I watched Comic Relief 2011 my conviction that asking the question “Why does God allow so much suffering in the world?” is just a great human excuse was deeply strengthened again.

When the Bible states “There will always be poor people in the land – therefore I command you to be open handed toward your fellow human beings who are poor and needy in your land” that simply tells me, when we see suffering in our world, our first question should be what resources have we got to help alleviate peoples pain, rather than blaming God.

And, for the many incidents that are beyond our human ability to solve or task our thinking to its limit, we can ask the questions why is God not doing anything and I have a sneaky suspicion that God is not offended by that question.
