CHRISTIAN COMMENT Aggressive Atheism

DURING the Pope’s recent visit to the UK, we’re told something that we already know, but for some reason we’ve been afraid to say it.

We’re experiencing a new kind of atheism “aggressive atheism”.

Those accused of being aggressive denied it, but then became even more aggressive in their response to the Pope’s comments.

I listened to a member of the Secular Society on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 defending his position, comparing God to Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy, and saying there’s absolutely no evidence for the existence of God.

Anyone that listened couldn’t help but notice the anger (or aggression) in his voice as he (and subsequent callers) mocked Christians for their faith in their “imaginary friend”.

Not surprising really, Jesus said “The world will hate you because of me”.

Interesting, with all this anti Christian aggression how easily we forget the way Christians throughout the centuries have made our world a better place.

William Wilberforce, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa to name just three of the many.

Most disaster relief efforts are headed up by Christian organisations but it generally goes unrecognised.

Going back to one comment on Radio 2, “you can’t prove the existence of God”, that’s true enough, but somebody once said, “but you can experience him”.

I believe that anyone can have a powerful experience of God, I know, I’ve experienced it!

I remember hearing the story about an atheist who said, “My grandfather was an atheist, my father was an atheist, and I just thank God that I’m and atheist too”.

“Imaginary friend?” I think not.

Why not ask God for an experience of him, he loves that kind of request (if you mean it) you won’t be disappointed, and he’s a great cure for aggression.
