Oldest newlyweds enjoyed a cuppa after Sussex nuptials

George Kirby and Doreen Luckie from Eastbourne, signed their way into the record books thanks to their combined age - of almost 195.

Devoted George, who turned 103 on his big day on Saturday, said he had a “lovely day” finally getting hitched to partner of 27 years Doreen, 92.

But when the pair retired to their special hotel suite on the wedding night George hung a “do not disturb” sign on the door - before they tucked into tea and biscuits.

Retired RAF-veteran George said, “We had a lovely day, and it was great seeing everybody.

“We were quite tired when we finally made it to our room, so I put the do not disturb sign on the door and ordered up some tea and biscuits.

“I’d had quite enough excitement.”

They wed in front of around 50 delighted guests and a representative from Guinness with a combined age of a record-breaking 194 years and 281 days.

Doreen said, “It was such a lovely surprise when he proposed, and the wedding day went off without a hitch. It was such a great day.

“I was very glad for my bed when it was all over, though.”

Between them the pair have had seven children, 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The pair live together at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne, which is run by George’s son Neil Kirby, 63, where the ceremony took place.

Best man Neil said, “They had a fantastic day - everybody was so happy for them.

“After the ceremony they posed for pictures, before we had canapes and a glass of bubbly.

“We did the speeches before the meal, which was a wonderful lunch picked by Doreen, and then had a little bit more wine.

“It was a wonderful day - I’ve been part of over 2000 weddings and this was definitely the best - alongside my own, of course.”

He added, “They went up to their suite quite early, so after they ordered some tea, I went up to see how they were getting on.

“I couldn’t stop laughing when I saw the ‘do not disturb’ sign hanging on the door.”
