NHS West Sussex issues bank holiday advice

Judith Wright, director of public health at NHS West Sussex, said: “We want people to enjoy themselves over the Bank Holidays, to have fun and stay safe, and a small amount of planning will really help that.

“If you need help with routine medical care when your practice is closed, some pharmacies will be open around the county and can offer advice on minor problems, and treatments to help.”

“During bank holidays we do tend to see a rise in the number of people using emergency care services,” said Mrs Wright.

“As patients, we can all do our bit to think about which service is most appropriate for our needs.

“This will help to make sure that everyone can get the right advice or treatment from the right health care professional and at the right time.”

She said A&E departments were not always the most appropriate places to go.

Injuries that need medical attention, but are not life threatening, can be treated at a minor injuries unit or urgent treatment centre. The easiest way to find your nearest centre is by calling NHS Direct.

There will be pharmacists open 24 hours a day over the holidays and information on the nearest open pharmacy can be found by contacting NHS Direct.

Anyone who needs to contact a doctor outside normal surgery hours can call their surgery.

There will be an answer phone message telling patients how to contact the out-of-hours service. This should only be used for urgent medical problems.
