French traditional dance group, Dansez Francais Dance Club Brighton, performed for the crowds, and English performers The Rude Mechanicals entertained visitors with their own unique brand of folk dance tunes.

Jeannette Simpson, a member of the church council, said: “It was a lovely day - because the weather was good, we were able to hold some of the activities outside.

“We held a flower festival inside the church, which was wonderful.

“We managed to raise over £1,000 during the fete - half of this will go to the Friends of St Nicolas’ and will help to maintain the church, and half will go to Chichester Diocese Family Support.”

St Nicolas’ Church also held a Lammas Loaves competiton, where home bakers were invited to create loaves of bread.

Jeannette said: “This was a custom in Saxon times, when the first loaves were brought to the church at the beginning of August.

“We have several entries, and people voted for the ones they liked.

“Some of the winning loaf was used in the holy communion the following day.”

Children took part in the ‘Hunt the Teddy Bear’ competition, and parents relaxed in the Pimms tent or indulged in a cream tea.

Bric a brac stalls and toy stalls were also available.
