Museum holding exhibition of theatrical life

The exhibition is a mix of colour and sparkle which incorporates Steyning’s long tradition of amateur dramatics within the town.

Having started on October 20, the exhibition is due to run until March 31, 2017.

A museum spokesman said: “The exhibition incorporates a vast array of costume, posters, photographs and historical memoirs to illustrate the traditions in style.

“A long-term resident and ex tiller-girl Lynette Rose has loaned some of her stage memorabilia to delight all visitors and conjure up many memories for other visitors.

“A dress warn in ‘The Boyfriend’ and a silken fan are displayed as well as colourful costumes from ‘The Mikado’.

“The exhibition also incorporates a number of items supplied by the Children’s Drama Group from Steyning. Willy Wonka’s hat and a crocodile from Peter Pan are also on display as well as many photographs from various drama performances.

“Visitors will find a reluctant pierrot and some enthusiastic Woodcraft Folk all contributing to stage life in Steyning.

“Steyning Grammar School – renowned for its thespian activities - has also contributed costumes and photographs from some of their memorable productions which range from ‘Dracula Spectacular’ to a play about apartheid in South Africa.”

Exhibition curator Chris Tod said: “I was amazed by the amount and variety of costumes and stage props that we have discovered and also by the extent of dramatic activity in the town over the past 150 years.”

From Morris dancers to memories of the town, this fascinating exhibition should not be missed.

Steyning Museum is located opposite the parish church in Church Street, Steyning.

The exhibition is free to attend and is open 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Saturdays, the exhibition is open from 10.30am to 4pm and from 2.30pm to 4pm on Sunday afternoons.
