Moving incentive for council tenants

COUNCIL tenants can be given up to £5,000 if they are willing to downsize and move to a smaller home.

Adur tenants who live in a four-bedroom house or maisonette and are happy to move to a one or two-bedroom flat would get 5,000.

Tenants in a three-bedroom house or maisonette willing to move to a one-bedroom flat would be eligible for 3,500 and tenants with a two-bedroom house willing to move to a one-bedroom flat would get 2,500.

At the end of last September, Adur District Council had 312 families on it transfer list, but the figure has now reached 335.

Housing committee chairman, Julie Searle said: "Adur has a shortage of three and four-bedroom, affordable family homes to rent and many of the families on the transfer list need bigger homes.

"We want to encourage more people to move into smaller homes when they no longer need a larger home, but we recognise it's their choice."

The council's incentive scheme for tenants to move was revitalised in 2002 and is advertised with tenants regularly.
