Mayor Sean McDonald was assaulted last week.

Sussex Police confirmed a man was assaulted and injured in Marine Parade, near the amusements, shortly after 3pm.

According to police, Brandan Michael Hayhurst, 52, unemployed, of Upper West Drive in Ferring, has now been bailed to appear before Worthing Magistrates at 10am on Tuesday August 16 to answer the charge.

On Saturday, the mayor wrote on Facebook: “Thank you for your lovely messages and just to confirm I am fine, keeping calm and carrying on. I was the victim of an assault and a person has been arrested and charged.

“I will not be making any further comments as the matter is sub judice but thank you for your thoughts. I will be attending events as scheduled.”
