Police said officers were told that the victim fell in with a group of other men in the town on Monday evening, but was struck in the face after returning to a flat in Buckingham Road, sustaining bruising and a chipped tooth.

He was then apparently followed by his assailant - a white man in his 20s, 5ft 11inch, slim and with short fair hair - and a group of four or five black men, according to police.

Police said soon after reaching his home in Wordsworth Road one of its windows was smashed and the man who had assaulted him climbed onto a flat roof, reached in and stole £200 from a coat pocket.

A 26-year-old Worthing man was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and is currently in police custody while enquiries continue.

Police searched the area, and said suspected members of the group were seen to ‘starburst’, running away in several different directions.

Anyone who saw what happened or who may have other information is asked to email [email protected] or phone 101, quoting serial 1436 of 22/08.
