Police investigating a burglary in Lindfield Road, Hailsham, saw a man acting suspiciously in the garden outside and went to question him.

Unfortunately for the man, he didn’t realise who the officers was – as he wasn’t in uniform – so blurted out that his erratic behaviour was because the police were looking for him.

“The officer obligingly arrested him on suspicion of burglary,” said a police spokesperson.

On a search of the suspect’s house, officers then found what they believe to be £150,000 of ecstasy and cannabis resin.

The man, 44, was then arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of ecstasy and cannabis, and possession of cocaine with intent to supply.

Police also found there had been a fire in a metal bin, leading to him being further arrested on suspicion of arson with intent or reckless as to whether life was endangered.

A woman, 28, was also arrested on suspicion of possessing amphetamine with intent to supply and being concerned in the supply of cocaine and cannabis.

Both suspects have been interviewed and released on bail until September 1 while enquiries continue.

Detective Inspector Mark O’Brien said, “The estimated street value of the drugs seized is in excess of £150,000 and we’re delighted that they are now out of circulation.”
