Malawians will be surfing the net thanks to IT firm

AN IT firm will help villagers in Africa log-on to computers for the first time after donating equipment for a new internet café.

Swan Digital, in Riverside Industrial Estate, in Littlehampton, will provide equipment for the facility, on the outskirts of Zomba, Malawi.

The firm are working with Portsmouth-based businesspeople, Waida and Alfred Lakudzala, who are ploughing £300,000 into the café, which will double-up as a tourist lodge.

The couple, who originate from Malawi, want to open the facility by next summer.

Managing director of Swan Digital Adrian Adams said: “When I was told about the project, all the people there, and how they would benefit, I put my hand up and said we could provide the equipment.

“The internet is a window to the world, and most of the people there will not even have seen a computer before, so I was eager to be a part of it.”

Construction is currently taking place to build the lodge and café, and around 60 jobs have been created locally, as a result.

It is hoped that the Swan team will visit Malawi when the facility is built, to help install the equipment.

The couple will also employ someone in Malawi to handle any technology issues.
