Maiden flight

A GERMAN woman flew across the English Channel for the first time on Tuesday and landed in Shoreham Airport as part of a whistle-stop tour and holiday.

Monika Tetzner, from Butzbach, flew in a motor-glider with her friend, Claudia Winkler, from Germany, via Le Touquet in France.

Both women are pilots and it was the first time that Ms Tetzner had flown outside Germany and Austria, although Mrs Winkler had flown across the English Channel before.

They will be staying with friends and family in Findon, before flying to Plymouth, the Isle of Wight and Jersey before heading home.

Mrs Tetzner told the Herald: "There was a lot of bad weather in Germany. At first we thought we would have to return home because the cloud was very low. But fortunately in France it got a lot better.

"Sometimes we flew at only about 1,000 feet. On our way to Shoreham we flew 4,500 feet over the channel."
