Long-awaited album completes Shoreham guitarist's trilogy

His home crowd will be able to hear his latest tribute to the great Paraguayan guitarist Agustin Barrios Mangoré at the Ropetackle Arts Centre on Thursday, October 29, at 7.30pm.

The Girl at the Airport is the culmination of a four-year project, during which the barefoot, stand-up guitarist has completed a trilogy of albums.

The long-awaited new album tells a story and includes new works discovered by Richard while in South America, as well as many of his own compositions inspired by his travels.

“This is a Graham Greene tinged tale of an Englishman experiencing South American culture at first hand, unearthing musical treasures along the way,” he explained.

“My own tracks, Night Flight to Lima, Our Man in Asuncion and, of course, the title track The Girl at the Airport, set the scene.”

The title track was recorded in Prague last July with The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

For the Shoreham gig, Richard will be joined on stage by a string section made up of musicians from across Sussex for the piece.

Richard is returning to his home venue direct from tours in South America and Spain. The international launch of the album took place in Asuncion earlier this month.

The UK launch concert begins at 7.30pm and there will be meals available in the foyer beforehand. Copies of the album will also be on sale. Tickets £15, £13 concessions, £5 for 16s and under, from the box office on 01273 464440 or visit ropetacklecentre.co.uk for more information.

Ever since his official debut at the Southbank Centre, London, in 1986, Richard has pursued his diverse interests in ‘unclassical’ music.

The Girl at the Airport is part of a trilogy of albums, also including The Number 26 Bus to Paraguay, released in 2011, and Hijo de Hombre, released in 2012.
