Last post for Pauline

IT was the end of an era on Shoreham Beach last Wednesday as Pauline Karadzas retired from Paules Newsagents and Post Office in Ferry Road, after 42 years' service.

Pauline had been the sub-postmistress serving the eastern half of Shoreham Beach at Paules since January 3, 1963, but she actually joined the Post Office in Portslade in 1949.

She said: "I have always felt honoured to be part of such a truly marvellous organisation and it has been my life, and great joy throughout the years."

She has lived on Shoreham Beach since 1962 and said it was very different back then.

Ms Karadzas told the Herald: "With its beach-front properties used by the army for target practice during the war, and left virtually derelict, there were so few buildings and the view of the Downs was completely unrestricted."

Over the years, she has served thousands of Shoreham Beach residents and many famous faces, including Ronnie Corbett, Moira Lister and Donald Campbell, who used to come down and see the engineers working on Bluebird at the old Watercraft factory.

Ms Karadzas was also a governor of Shoreham Beach First School for 12 years and is secretary of the Shoreham Beach Residents' Association.

Paules has now been sold to Sami Sabet, who runs the Shorelife West Beach post office.

Ms Karadzas said she was going to continue living on Shoreham Beach and was planning to volunteer with the British Red Cross, because her mother served with them during World War Two.

She added: "I've had wonderful support from my staff and the customers here."
