Jack’s 34-year-old ‘dream’ could have reduced traffic

THE daughter of an ex-Worthing councillor believes that her father had the solution to the town’s growing congestion problems, 34 years ago.

In 1979, Jack Strudwick, of Ham Lane, Worthing, first made public his idea to create a link road between the A27 and A259 in an edition of the Worthing Herald.

The idea was to stop heavy traffic from going through the town centre by creating a relief road in East Worthing to take lorries from the industrial sites straight to the A27.

He said he revised the plan in his head over three or four years while he oversaw the borough council allotments.

Although the landscape has changed since the inception of the idea, the road would have gone from the east side of Brooklands, across allotments and over low-lying fields up to the A27, joining opposite Lambley’s Lane in Sompting.
