Historial institutions explored

Well-known local historian Trevor Povey will give an illustrated talk about the fascinating story of three Portslade institutions.

Find out about the medieval manor in Drove Road, which became a convent and is now occupied by homeless charity Emmaus Brighton and Hove.

Explore the former Hove Borough Council isolation hospital at Foredown, where many patients from the Brighton smallpox outbreak were nursed.

All that remains now is the Foredown Tower, a learning and visitor centre with a small café.

Finally, learn more about the London County Council approved school on the Southwick border, which has now disappeared completely.

The Heritage Talk takes place in the Garden Room at Southwick Community Centre, in Southwick Street, Southwick, on Monday at 7.30pm. Entrance is £2 for members and £4 for non-members.

This talk replaces the planned Heritage Talk for January, The Wonders of the Night Sky, which has had to be postponed.
