Carpenter Andy Ramus, who found the copy of Mr Alderman Mayall’s important speech while working in Southdown Road, decided the museum was the best place for it.

The speech was delivered at a meeting of the Shoreham Harbour trustees on July 20, 1875, and it helped save the harbour and ensure its future.

Mr Ramus said: “It is nice to see it is going to the museum, where it belongs. It is an important historical document, going to the place that has Shoreham’s historic interest most at heart.”

Emma O’Connor, museum officer, said the document would go into the High Street museum’s paper archive on Shoreham.

“It will be a lovely addition to the archive. We have got a few bits about the town, although most things that are very big go to West Sussex Record Office,” she said.

“Because it is pertinent to Shoreham Harbour, it is nice to have it here and it will feature in future exhibitions on Shoreham Harbour.”

She said the speech demonstrated the 19th century belief that Shoreham Harbour could play an important part in the south coast economy.
