Growth deal to help deliver '˜thousands of new jobs and homes' in Adur and Worthing

West Sussex County Council has signed its third growth deal, with Adur and Worthing councils set to work in partnership with the authority on a number of key projects over the next five years.

Louise Goldsmith, leader of West Sussex County Council, said: “As councils, our first priority is always our residents so by working closer together we can multiply our impact and unlock opportunities for new homes and employment.

“We will also use our combined knowledge to attract investments from the private sector and funding opportunities from a variety of sources. I am so delighted to have this agreement in place and look forward to seeing its impact.”

The key projects include:

– Worthing Town Centre: new homes, commercial, leisure and retail space including Teville Gate House and Union Place

– Decoy Farm, East Worthing : attract private sector investment to support the regeneration of Worthing town centre and Shoreham Harbour

– New Monks Farm/Shoreham Airport: new homes, commercial space and road improvements

– Shoreham Harbour: new homes and employment space on western harbour arm

– West Sussex One Public Estate parnership: help deliver development of sites in Pond Road, Shoreham and Centenary House, Durrington

– Gigabit fibre broadband: Adur and Worthing key locations for gigabit broadband speed project

Adur District Council leader Neil Parkin said the deal was another step forward in the council’s ‘ambitious’ plans for the district.

He said: “This five year deal with West Sussex shows our commitment to working with others to create hundreds of new homes and new jobs across the district while providing great value for money for local taxpayers.

“It means we can bring forward new developments, such as the proposal for New Monks Farm, as well as bringing redundant sites, such as the former Burrscroft care home, in Pond Road, back into use.”

Worthing Borough Council leader Dan Humphreys said the deal will use money from existing budgets as well as new revenue generated through business rates to bring forward major projects.

“In forming ever closer ties with West Sussex County Council and by adopting a more business-like approach, we will generate investment in Worthing to benefit the whole of our community.”
