Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association is putting together an application for town or village green status for Beach Green, Shoreham’s only major open green space.

This status helps to protect open spaces in community use from development, but they can still be used for leisure and sporting purposes.

Marine Ward councillor Joss Loader, who is also chairman of Shoreham Beach Residents’ Association, said: “Beach Green plays an important role in the history of our community and many residents have such fond memories of it, either as children growing or up or as adults raising their families.

“Located immediately alongside the Local Nature Research, it is also used by dog walkers, water sports enthusiasts, picnickers and for many other reasons and hosts community events, such as the Beach Dreams annual festival.

“We’d like to hear from everybody who’s used the Green – so Beach residents and also visitors from Shoreham town, across Adur and from further afield.

“Help us to protect it – both for current visitors and also for future generations.”

The application will not include the part of the land already earmarked for development by Adur District Council on the south side of Beach Green, by the public toilet block and the small area immediately around it.

The association plans to submit the application by the first week in September.

Statements and forms can be posted into the beach box in the beach store on Ferry Road or emailed to the association treasurer, Julia Watts, at [email protected].
