The logo was a key part of signs designed to advertise the revamped centre – but was met with horror by Adur District Council’s planning committee last week before plans were rejected.

“We have listened to the people and we are dropping it,” said council leader Neil Parkin, adding the logo did not represent Shoreham.

The council still plans to install signs around the centre but they will be more respectful to the conservation area, with no alternative logo planned.

The application appeared doomed from the start, as council officers were twice asked for more information by the planning committee.

After two deferrals, the committee was finally presented with artist’s impressions of the signs.

The logo, which would have been affixed to the front and rear of the centre, as well as appearing on several free-standing totem signs, was described as ‘ghastly’,, ‘appalling’, ‘yuck’ and ‘something to do with the EU campaign’.
