Nearly 30 per cent of all grades achieved by pupils were graded A* or A. Over 54 per cent of all grades achieved were the highest marks of A*, A or B, and 75 per cent of students gained 5A* to C in their subjects.

Eleanor Gisbourne, 16, said she was ‘over the moon’ after receiving top marks.

“I was really nervous before, but I’m thrilled now. This means I get to stay on at the Sixth Form,” she said.

Happy and relieved with her results, Philippa Arkle, 16, said she performed better than expected with 10A*s and 3As.

“I’ll be celebrating tonight with a takeaway,” she said.

Tom Carey, 16, said he was ‘shaking’ when collecting his grades.

“I got 12 A*s, I didn’t think I’d get that. As I walked up I was shaking, I’m still shaking now,” he said.

Feeling ‘shocked’, Amy Burroughs, 16, said she was not expecting 8A*s and 5As.

“I’m now going onto the Sixth Form and it means I get to do all the classes I want,” she said.

Head teacher Nick Wergan said: “Our students really deserve these fantastic outcomes; we set high expectations and they have met them, showing the grit, growth mindset and zest that not only produces excellent results but especially enables them to be successful in their next steps.

“I am very proud of their efforts and determination and thank our superb staff for their dedicated support.

“It takes a great team to support this student success, with students, staff and home committing to our ethos for ‘every person to be the best they can be.”

Assistant head teacher Lindsey Thompson said: “We are so very proud of all our students and their fantastic achievements and we would like to wish them every success in their 6th form studies! We are also delighted that so many of our students have chosen to continue their education at Steyning Grammar School Sixth Form College which also achieved another set of outstanding results this year.”
